Instructions & Introductions

Purpose

To document how various facets of LINCS data are modelled, along with reference authorities for the populating vocabularies. This document will provide a basis for instruction for how to model data in a LINCS-compatible manner, as well as aid in navigation and discovery.

General Guidelines

Document Structure

Each node (pattern entry) includes the following information to answer the following five questions:

  1. What is the concept?
    • Pattern category
    • Pattern name
    • Pattern definition
  2. How is the concept represented?
    • Visual representation of pattern (diagram)
    • Pattern abstraction (class → property → class chains)
  3. How does the data populate or fit into this representation?
    • Content descriptions
      • Type of value
      • Expected value
      • Format or other requirements for the value
    • Example with abstraction
      • Typical use case
      • Edge case (if application)
  4. What else should I know?
    • Resource links
      • Resources from the project shout the entity or property definitions
      • Additional related resources
    • Discussion elements pertaining to the pattern (if applicable)
    • Datasets that include the pattern
  5. What does the data look like when it is in RDF (TTL) and following this pattern?
    • Pattern in TTL
    • Link to SPARQL query searching for an example instance of the pattern from LINCS

Data Requirements

The patterns documented are intended to show the possibility for data that can be represented. The only element that is required is for an entity to be declared as a class so that it can be included in discovery for types of entities. Beyond that, the properties that connect that entity to other entities or datum are optional based on the requirements of the data.

Basic Patterns

Scope

“Basic Patterns” describes patterns that are used across all facets of the data: they are general concepts that are important basic building blocks for more specific data patterns.
